welcome to sophomore year

yay. i'm going to try to be more accountable this year. and i'm going to continue only capitalizing when i feel like it. if you're new here, or if you haven't read all my posts, you are by absolutely no means obligated to do so. you won't be lost if you didn't keep up with my freshman year. (if you did keep up with this blog last year, you know that i didn't even do a very good job of keeping up with my freshman year.) anyhow, here are some general points about me that you should probably know before i start unloading my first couple weeks on you.
  • this is my second year at truman state in kirksville, missouri.
  • i'm a history and sociology double major, and i'm also minoring in spanish.
  • kate, my roommate this year, was my suitemate last year. we get along really well, and i consider her one of my best friends up here.
  •  my other friends include: daniel evans, one of my high school friends; sam and mason, who are fellow history majors (these three all live in the suite directly below kate and i); and daniel young, also known as mommy because he sometimes acted like a mom to kate and i last year.
  • i also have friends in spanish club, which i am currently the president of, and amnesty international.
  • in addition to these two organizations, i have also recently joined the historical society.
  • kate and i's suitemates are international students from asia. one of them is from china and the other is from bhutan.
i think that's all the basic information you need. if not...oh well. you'll find out eventually. on to the start of another year.

so first things first. moving in. kate got there before i did, and i left all my stuff in my car so we could get our furniture moved around. we both wanted our beds delofted, and the stupid way our room was designed makes it hard to do that with all the other furniture we have (a wardrobe, fridge, two desks with chairs, and a chest of drawers). so we shoved all of kate's stuff in the bathroom and enlisted the help of daniel and sam. we finally got it all arranged one way, and realized that that was simply not going to work out. so we took a dinner break and got back to work. we finally got everything properly arranged and i started bringing all my stuff in. we were completely done arranging and unpacking by ten something that night.

classes started two days later. this semester i'm taking basic statistics, spanish grammar and composition, exploring religions, anthropology of gender, and world history & historiography 2. i was concerned about statistics because it's of a mathy nature and spanish because i haven't taken it since last fall, but everything's turned out pretty alright. i really like all of my professors, with the exception of my stats professor because he's nerdy in the know-it-all sort of way. but i've warmed up to him, so he's not all that bad anymore. mostly because that class is super easy (we've done stem-and-leaf plots and mean, median, and mode. it's like fifth grade math). overall, my workload is pretty manageable as well, with the exception of history, of course. i'm always drowning in history readings. but it'll be okay. i would say of all my classes, though, that exploring religions is my favorite. i don't even know why, i just really like religions. we're starting hinduism next week, whee!

as far as organizations are concerned, there's only been one meeting of everything so far, but i can tell everything's gonna be pretty great this semester. we've got some more members in amnesty and spanish club, which is great since they were both pretty small last semester. i'm excited about them :)

another new thing this semester: i have a scholarship job. i'm working as an office assistant for the secretary of justice systems, sociology/anthropology, and psychology. all i really do is put mail in mailboxes and fill the copier with paper and that sort of thing. there's a lot of down time, which is good because that means that i can do my homework. or check facebook. the only annoying thing is that my schedule has changed a couple times already, so i'm hoping this new one will stick. currently i'm working fridays from eight to noon, which means that my fridays are gonna be pretty full since i also have three classes starting at twelve thirty and ending by three thirty.

we haven't really been up to any exciting shenanigans yet. kate is determined to do something exciting every day until her birthday (which is three days before mine) to celebrate the end of her teen years. one night we watched anastasia (exciting, right? except that it actually was because i hadn't seen it in a long time. and i never realized how many famous people are in it. look it up on imdb or something. it's crazy.) the most exciting exciting thing we've done is do some inspirational chalking. for those of you that may not know, a good way to advertise events and stuff on campus is to write it on the sidewalk with chalk. but kate and i decided that we were going to write some nice things to brighten people's days. we wrote stuff like "you are loved" and "you are someone's ray of sunshine" and "you have the power to create an amazing day". it was pretty awesome.

that's all the excitement i have for you this time (i think). i'll post again in a couple/few weeks. have a fantastic september (even though we're already eight days into it..)!
